LAYERS - The Special Sauce of Working Digitally

I love working digitally, especially on my tablet. It's always handy when inspiration, or boredom strikes and I can let loose my creativity. I've thought about the traditional vs. digital aspect of making art and I think the major appeal to digital is the layers and ease of edits. Even when you're drawing or painting traditionally you use layers to build up gradations and contrast, but with digital you can rearrange, work under/over a preexisting layer, and just as easily hide/edit/delete experimental artistic decisions. So here's a little example of a recent portrait I made on my iPad that features the different layers of the final artwork. As you can see the line work is serparate from the shading (which has multiple layers) and final highlights are added as the top layer.
